Charoitt er et sjeldent silikatmineral kjent for
sine karakteristiske lilla til fiolette mønstre og
silkeglans. Mineralet ble først beskrevet på
1900-tallet og finnes hovedsakelig i Sakha-republikken
i Russland, hvor forekomsten ved Chara-elven har
gitt steinen navnet sitt.
Charoitt består av et komplekst kalium-, kalsium-
og natriumsilikat og dannes gjennom metasomatiske
prosesser i kalkrike bergarter under høyt trykk og
temperatur. Mineralet forekommer ofte sammen
med andre mineraler som aegirin, mikroklin og
tinaksite, noe som bidrar til de varierte mønstrene
og strukturene som kjennetegner steinen.
Fargene varierer fra lys lavendel til dyp fiolett,
ofte med svarte, hvite eller brune innslag. Mange
eksemplarer viser bølgende eller fiberrike mønstre
med perlemors- eller silkeglans. På grunn av den
fibrøse strukturen kan overflaten gi et visuelt spill i lyset.
Charoitt har en hardhet på omtrent 5–6 på Mohs’
hardhetsskala. Selv om steinen egner seg godt til
smykker og dekorative gjenstander, bør den behandles
med noe forsiktighet for å unngå riper og slag.

Charoite is a rare silicate mineral known for
its characteristic purple to violet patterns and
silky sheen. The mineral was first described on
20th century and found mainly in the Sakha Republic
in Russia, where the deposit on the Chara River has
gave the stone its name.
Charoite consists of a complex of potassium, calcium
and sodium silicate and are formed through metasomatic
processes in calcareous rocks under high pressure and
temperature. The mineral often occurs together
with other minerals such as aegirine, microcline and
tinaksite, which contributes to the varied patterns
and the structures that characterize the stone.
The colors vary from light lavender to deep violet,
often with black, white or brown elements. Many
specimens show undulating or fibrous patterns
with mother-of-pearl or silk sheen. Because of it
the fibrous structure can give the surface a visual play in the light.
Charoite has a hardness of approximately 5–6 on the Mohs'
hardness scale. Although the stone is suitable for
jewelry and decorative items, it should be treated
with some care to avoid scratches and bumps.
