Mineralet har trigonal krystallstruktur og en hardhet på ca. 5–6 på Mohs skala.
Navnet stammer fra mineralets karakteristiske rødbrune streiffarge.
Utseendet varierer fra metallisk grå til sølvfarget i polerte former, til rødbrune og jordaktige
overflater i rå tilstand. Hematitt dannes i flere geologiske miljøer og er en av de viktigste naturlige kildene til jern.
Naturlige variasjoner i farge, glans og overflatestruktur er normalt for dette materialet.

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe₂O₃ and belongs to the oxide group.
The mineral has a trigonal crystal structure and a hardness of approx. 5–6 on the Mohs scale.
The name derives from the mineral's characteristic red-brown streak colour.
The appearance varies from metallic gray to silvery in polished forms, to reddish brown and earthy
surfaces in their raw state. Hematite forms in several geological environments and is one of the most important natural sources of iron.
Natural variations in colour, gloss and surface texture are normal for this material.
