Bergkrystall er en fargeløs og gjennomsiktig variant av mineralet kvarts (silisiumdioksid, SiO₂).
Betegnelsen «iris» brukes om bergkrystall som viser regnbuefargede refleksjoner når lys
brytes i indre sprekker eller planesoner i krystallen.
Regnbueeffekten er et optisk fenomen og oppstår kun under bestemte lys- og synsvinkler. Den er i
kke et resultat av farging eller overflatebehandling, men av naturlige strukturer i steinen.
Kvarts har trigonal krystallstruktur og en hardhet på ca. 7 på Mohs skala. Inneslutninger, sprekker
og variasjoner i klarhet er normalt og er forutsetningen for iris-effekten.
Iris Rock Crystal

Rock crystal is a colorless and transparent variety of the mineral quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂).
The term "iris" is used for rock crystal that shows rainbow-colored reflections when light is refracted in internal cracks or plane zones in the crystal.
The rainbow effect is an optical phenomenon and only occurs under certain light and viewing angles. It is not a result of coloring or surface treatment, but of natural structures in the stone.
Quartz has a trigonal crystal structure and a hardness of about 7 on the Mohs scale. Inclusions, cracks
and variations in clarity are normal and are the prerequisite for the iris effect.
