Lapis lazuli er en naturlig bergart som hovedsakelig
består av mineralet lazuritt, sammen med varierende
mengder kalsitt og pyritt. Den dype blå fargen skyldes
lazuritt, mens hvite partier stammer fra kalsitt og
gullfargede metalliske inneslutninger fra pyritt.
Som råstein er lapis lazuli ubehandlet, uten sliping eller
polering. Overflaten kan være ujevn og vise naturlige bruddflater,
strukturer og variasjoner i mineralfordeling. Fargen kan fremstå
mattere enn i polerte produkter.
Lapis lazuli har en samlet hardhet på ca. 5–5,5 på Mohs skala.
Variasjoner i fargeintensitet, mengde kalsitt og forekomst av
pyritt er normalt og påvirker steinens visuelle uttrykk.
Hvert stykke er unikt i struktur og sammensetning.

Lapis lazuli is a natural rock that mainly
consists of the mineral lazurite, along with varying
amounts of calcite and pyrite. The deep blue color is due to
lazurite, while white areas originate from calcite and
golden-colored metallic inclusions from pyrite.
As a raw stone, lapis lazuli is untreated, without grinding or
polishing. The surface may be uneven and show natural fracture surfaces,
structures and variations in mineral distribution. The color may appear
matter than in polished products.
Lapis lazuli has an overall hardness of approximately 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale.
Variations in color intensity, amount of calcite and occurrence of
pyrite are normal and affect the visual expression of the stone.
Each piece is unique in structure and composition.
