variant av mineralet beryll, med
kjemisk sammensetning Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈.
Fargen skyldes spor av jern i

Mineralet har heksagonal krystallstruktur
og en hardhet på ca. 7,5–8 på Mohs skala,
noe som gjør det relativt slitesterkt.
Akvamarin forekommer ofte som
transparente til gjennomskinnelige
krystaller med glassaktig overflate når
den er slipt eller polert.
Fargeintensitet og klarhet varierer
naturlig mellom ulike forekomster.
