Pyritt er et jernsulfidmineral med kjemisk formel FeS₂ og tilhører sulfidgruppen.
Mineralet har kubisk krystallstruktur og danner ofte velutviklede krystaller med
karakteristiske geometriske former, som kuber og oktaedre.
Den metalliske, gullaktige overflaten skyldes lysrefleksjon i krystallstrukturen og skal
ikke forveksles med edelmetall. Pyritt har en hardhet på ca. 6–6,5 på Mohs skala,
men er relativt sprøtt og kan sprekke ved slag eller trykk.
Mineralet kan oksidere over tid, særlig ved høy fuktighet. Naturlige variasjoner i form,
overflate og struktur er normalt for pyritt.

Pyrite is an iron sulphide mineral with the chemical formula FeS₂ and belongs to the sulphide group.
The mineral has a cubic crystal structure and often forms well-developed crystals with
characteristic geometric shapes, such as cubes and octahedra.
The metallic, gold-like surface is due to light reflection in the crystal structure and shell
not to be confused with precious metal. Pyrite has a hardness of approx. 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale,
but is relatively brittle and can crack on impact or pressure.
The mineral can oxidize over time, especially at high humidity. Natural variations in shape,
surface and structure are normal for pyrite.
