Svart turmalin er en variant av
mineralgruppen turmalin, vanligvis
av typen schorl. Mineralet består av
komplekse borosilikater og har trigonal
krystallstruktur.
Den karakteristiske svarte fargen og
ofte langsgående rillede overflaten
gjør mineralet lett gjenkjennelig,
spesielt i rå form. Krystallene er
ofte prismatiske og kan variere i
størrelse og form.
Svart turmalin har en hardhet på
ca. 7–7,5 på Mohs skala og forekommer
både som enkeltkrystaller og i massive
strukturer. Naturlige variasjoner i form,
overflate og struktur er normalt, og hvert
stykke er unikt.

Black tourmaline is a variant of the
mineral group tourmaline, usually
of the type schorl. The mineral consists of
complex borosilicates and has a trigonal
crystal structure.
The characteristic black color and
often longitudinally grooved surface
make the mineral easily recognizable,
especially in raw form. The crystals are
often prismatic and can vary in
size and shape.
Black tourmaline has a hardness of
about 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale and occurs
both as single crystals and in massive
structures. Natural variations in shape,
surface and structure are normal, and each
piece is unique.
